A life-like android robot marked her first day at work as a receptionist at a major department store in Tokyo on Monday, greeting customers as they walked in. The Mitsukoshi Nihombashi department store unveiled their new receptionist “Aiko Chihira” to customers and the media. The job description of this receptionist robot is giving directions to customers and boosting store campaigns. Aiko Chihira was developed by Japanese electronics manufacturer Toshiba.
According to the store marketing manager, Gakudai Nanba:
“We hope the robot will spark conversation between people. And rather than using touch panel displays directions which makes for a very cheerless way of communicating directions. I’m hoping this will become something that would spark a giggle or two.”
Dressed in a kimono and smiling, Aiko Chihira greets shoppers at the entrance of Tokyo’s Mitsukoshi department store however, Chihira is not a regular employee.
